Kevin Newman has been mentioning Global National’s podcasting project for the last couple of weeks, but I only checked it out on Monday. This could be one of the coolest things to happen to Mass Media and podcasting so far this year. The entire audio portion of the Global National newscast is available via a podcast subscription, with only a minor delay after it goes to air (they do have to encode/publish the audio of the live newscast). It’s also available directly from the iTunes directory.
I listened to Monday’s show on the way home from work Tuesday (I missed it “live”) and it was great! The 30 minute newscast distilled down to 22 minutes of content (no commercials). It was a combination newscast and open microphone forum at a university in Toronto. Content that is harder to get from “traditional” podcasts (how ironic is that?)
I really hope they keep this project going!
Global National has been experimenting with this stuff for a while now – it looks like each of their key reporters was given a blog sometime in the summer, with the predictable results that usually happen when someone is “given a blog” – about one post per month, orphaned blogs for several months, then periodic posting. Also, I just tried to subscribe to feeds for a few of the blogs, and there doesn’t appear to be any RSS feeds (so, it’s not really a blog in my mind). I’ll be subscribing as soon as that’s fixed.
But the podcasting project may just be sustainable – it’s only a minor additional step in the show production workflow, and could largely be automated.

Update: I just read through a few posts on Kevin Newman’s blog and it’s so refreshing to read the unpolished, unmassaged, “risky” published thoughts/insights/rants of a Big Media Personality. I’ve trusted Kevin’s reportage since he started at Global National, have appreciated his obvious sense of humour in tackling the issues, and now totally respect him for putting himself out there.
Note to Global: your weblog software is teh suck, though. No easy way to navigate through the posts. No RSS feeds. No seaarchability within a blog. Waaay overly NASCARed advertising/branding on the pages, etc… Please, grab a copy of WordPress (or WordPress MultiUser, or Drupal, or Movabletype, or anything) and give the reporters some decent tools so they can do a better job of blogging (and we can follow along – and maybe respond).

My comment here is NOT about podcasting.
It is about today afternoon’s upbeat program on Global about Juvenile Arthritis, where they spoke of everything, except the CAUSES. I am 64 and in all my life I never heard of this disease, except just laterly, so the most interesting question is – what causes it? The GMOs? The Chemtrails, of which no media ever speaks? What are they? Why?
And why should I be enthusiastic about new technologies, when everything ends up in new weapons or ways of controlling the public? Orwell wrote about the TV tubes with the Eyes of the State hidden in them to observe us at home, and we thoguht it was a parody of Stalinism, and last week the Van. Sun said on first page, that new TV-cameras are being put on public transport stations, and we already had those pointed at us at the skytrain stations and passages, alegedly against terrorists. The communists scared their people with “imperialist agents lurking around”, but there was nobody except our neighbors (I grew up in the radical period of communism in E. Europe) – and now it’s the terrorist scare. Come on! And George Noory said on CFUN Radio, that Al Queda was originally sponsored by the Americans. Which is actually true. So why this hype now to help the cripple? Which is nice, but…
I read about a certain prof. Warwick, who promotes brain implant chips, which, he says, can help wheelchair people to drive their Forma 1 just by their thoughts, without moving a finger, thru their brain implants. What a popularization for those brain chips! Implants are there to improve our lives, and make us safer. like the cameras.
Yesterday I saw a Community Policing tent set up at a mall, and in the tent there were: a Korean-looikng man with blue shirt on, sitting at a table with two women who took up the data from kids who thought they might be kidnapped and so they wanted to be taken into a register to trace them more easily in case… and tehre was a woman who took photos of the kids, and there stood in the coner a man in white shirt and big dark sunglasses on, with his arms crossed over his chest, and who did not say a word or do anything, just oversaw… And I heard about the MoChip in the USA, the program to trace lost kids thru active chips put on their bodies. Orwell again, and new technology. And I read the Revelation with the Mark of the Beast, and I don’t think in prophecies, but someone is keen on realizing all those prophecies. By the way, if you know the Revelation, there is a certain star called Wormwood, which falls to the earth and…and the word Chernobyl happens to mean Wormwood in Russian. I am a materialist, and miracles don’t happen, only natural science which we don’t know yet – said Arthur C. Clarke.
All this sounds nice so far, let’s say everything just “happens”, but in last December 10th 2006 in the Toronto Star, pg. D1, there was an article about how the next generation of humanity will be chipped on their bodies with active chips that will monitor in real time all their body functions, and added the credit cards and computers, all their habits and actions and even movements will be monitored by local computers and analyzed and personal profiles drawn up – and the article says the population will be familiraized, tricked and coerced into accepting it. The article said, – and we come back to the young here – that at a juncture a horrible crime against a beautiful toddler will be committed and the wold’s Tv stations will give it full coverage, and this will push moms to accept the implantation of active chips on their kids, to be able to follot them all thei time on their PDAs. So you understand that I am not so enthusiastic about new technologies any more – somehow they end up being used against the population.
And there are the GMOs. I read somewhere that a prof, a doctor warned against GMOs, telling that those friuts and vegetables cause allergies with many people, which lowers their immune defense capabilities, which is a time bomb to explode when a pandemic strikes. And I heard 3 times since last summer, on various radios here that the bird flu is coming, coming. How do we know? Does the UN Ctr for Disease Ctrl use psychics?
As for GMO, if you think it’s a new idea, brace yourself: in 1861 a writer wrote in the Austrian Monarchy a play, titled The Tragedy of Man, and in Act 12 Lucifer introduced there his system planned for Mankind – the Phalanx, the labor camps of Stalin, where “Over the silent, calmly flowing order, Science stands guard with quiet reverence”, and “To live we let what is of use to us, But not in such an incomplete a state, As bungler nature has created it”. So you can see that the “perfection” of nature was a topic 146 years ago already. How did that writer know all this, and the public never heard of it? By the way, in that Phalanx of the future there were no national states any more, no family and no individuality. This was written in 1861 and they taught it in the communist schools, that this will be the Future. Ad they constantly told the slogan, that “man conquers nature”. And in 1945 H.G.Wells in The Shape of Things to Come wrote similar crazy things in the last chapter: “Modern State in Control of Life”. Wells wasn’t a commuist, or was he?
You see, I grew up in Eastern Europe, in Communism, and they also scared us with “imperialist agents lurking around”, to be vigilant for exploding inkpens that imperialist airplanes drop down on us to kill our kids. ANd I never saw or heard about a single pen that blew up or a single foreign agent, except our usual neighbors. And now our authorities start this comedy all over again here?
And a few days ago at 5 am I watched Channel A and a movie went on where some select guys in uniform spoke about saving humanity and they used the nazi salute, holding out theirr arms in front, only they held out their closed fists. What is coming back the whiff of what do we feel, smell and see? Communism or Nazism, or both? Because these are rather new phenomena, but they are systematic. Terrorist scare, and kidnapping scare. What comes next? Life is life, because there are inherent dangers, otherwise we are safe inside a metal box only. Or is Revelations for real?
So, Mr. Newman, I appreciate your work much, and pls tell me: what causes Juvenile Arthritis and what are those chemtrails, which appear daily on our skies?

oh, and “chemtrails” are high atmosphere vapour trails from airplanes. at the temperatures up there, they cause clouds to form. you know, like the exhaust from your car. Or are those chemtrails, too?

You did Vera Lynn proud this evening. But considering it was the anniversary of the Battle of Britain, it would have been appropriate to make mention of that few weeks that saved democracy. As I had my 13th birthhday living on the edge of London at that time I guess I am more sensitive to that history. As amember of the Air Training Corp I was being prepared to act as a messanger for the defense forces should the Nazis invade. I was almost disapointed it didn’t come to that!
