I, too, found in my research that online students (graduate status, in this case) wanted mostly instructor presence and structure. Thus, they wanted everything set up as in the syllabus, expectation, discussion board, etc. and a rich interaction with the instructor. After that they were good. But like Terry Anderson, I found they wanted interaction and connection but when they were available.

Lots of dichotomy in their needs: give but can’t always respond due to uber busy professional and family lives. In essence, they want interaction, information, feedback, and learning on their timeframe (I won’t suggest their terms as it did not appear that way). Does this call for AI and artificial agents to connect with them? Not sure.
