OK. I’m a dork. I made some ringtones today to use on my iPhone, based on short clips from Battlestar Galactica. Maybe someone else will find them useful. Please don’t sue me. They were all made from very short sound clips I found online.

I’m using “BSG – Phone Ring” as my ringtone (it’s the sound the telephones make on the ship) and the others are handy alarm notification sounds.

I’m still mulling over the finale – at first I had mixed feelings, and now I’m really liking the direction they went.
I think the perfect closing line would have been for God Six to turn to God Balthar and say:
“Double or nothing this time?” [cut to black]
Ronald Moore and his crew have been consistently doing amazing, high quality work. They’ve “gotten it” in a whole bunch of ways, from podcasting show commentaries as episodes air, to blogging, to video blogging behind-the-scenes stuff. I’m so totally, perhaps unhealthily, hooked on this show.
But they totally dropped the ball on the Season 3 webisodes. There are 10 mini-episodes leading up to the season 3 premier, viewable on the scifi.com website.
But, only if you have an IP address located in the USA.
Fans in Canada should be able to go to spacecast.com to view the webisodes, but apparently scifi.com wants the scoop. Meaning everyone outside the States is shut out.
Someone posted a copy of the first webisode to YouTube – an obvious copyright infringement – and that was promptly pulled down at the request of NBC.
I’m looking forward to BSG season 3 – more than I’ve ever anticipated any show. More than Lost. But, because I live North Of The Border, I can’t view the free, ad-sponsored webisodes. I don’t understand that.
Ron, please kick the studio’s ass for us non-US fans. They’re being really stupid about this.

There are only 2 words to describe the finale. Holy. Frak.
I’m not going to put any spoilers in here, because this finale would be worth watching the miniseries, and all of seasons 1 and 2 just to get to the point that you’re ready to watch this. It’s that amazing. I can’t remember a series that took such a gamble with rethinking the show so completely.
Ronald Moore described the finale as an attempt to roll hard sixes. I think he’s pulled it off. BSG wasn’t stale – yet – but was beginning to fall into the usual
10 print "oh no! run from the bad guys!"
20 pause
30 print "oh no! more bad guys!"
40 run
50 goto 10
formula. 2 seasons in, just as the show is really hitting its stride, they decide to be preemptive about it and completely rethink the genre. I said no spoilers, so I won’t say what they did, but I can’t frakking wait to see season 3. This changes everything.
Kudos, Ronald! I’m sure the network guys pushed back a little – not wanting to take a risk with the highest rated show they’ve ever had (IIRC). But being able to do something so radical is pretty amazing by itself. Just be glad that Fox isn’t bankrolling this one!

Well, the One More Thing event turned out to be pretty spiffy. Cool new iMac. Some funky new software (but is it iMac-only?) The new video iPod looks sweet – and the high end one still costs less than my 3G 20GB unit did…
The TV-on-iTunes/iPod thing looks like it will be awesome. But… Where is Battlestar Galactica? I’d subscribe to the whole season of that. I will likely buy the rest of this season of Lost, as well – or at least the ones I miss “live”. But, BSG? Every. Single. Episode.
Oh, and daddy needs a new iPod! Larger screen. Colour. Videos. Battery lasts 20 hours. Mine looks like a total turd next to the the cool new demo. I mean… It’s a classic 3G 20GB… Anyone want to give me, say $300 for it? 🙂
Also, can’t wait for the remote to be added to the Mini. That would be an almost perfect set-top box! Slap that Mini on top of the TV, and have a pretty high-end entertainment centre handy. It would be even cooler if you could add other apps – so you could customize it to let you check email, etc…

Dear Ronald D. Moore…
I am a total Battlestar Galactica junkie. Fell in love with the previews of the miniseries, and have been watching every episode since. Absolutely great stuff – some of the best scifi on tv. I love that it avoids the formulas as much as possible, and doesn’t treat the audience like lobotomized droolbots that need constant spoonfeeding. It seems like, by and large, each episode is better than the last – and that’s hard to do for 1 season, let alone 2.
The podcast by Ronald D. Moore is also a stroke of genius – giving us the “director’s commentary” (ok, the executive producer / developer’s commentary) in almost realtime. Brilliant.
However, I would really like it if either Ronald or someone from Scifi.com (whoever does the post production on the podcasts) would please turn down the volume on the commercial-break BEEEEEEP. If I’m listening on my iPod while commuting, I have already turned up the volume pretty high because the level of Ronald’s voice recording is rather low, and I need to hear over traffic noise etc… So, Ron (hey, if I let you into my iPod, I get to call you Ron) is talking about the episode, and how wonderful the actors are, yadda yadda. Then, after a second-long pause in speech, there’s the three-second-sonic-lobotomy. BEEEEEEEEEEP. No real warning. Just a HUGE spike in volume, turning my brain to mush for three seconds. I can dive for the pause button, the neurons controlling my finger don’t respond when I’ve been hit by the commercial-tone-stun-ray. By the time I’ve struggled my way to the volume controls, the lobotomy is over, and I start to recover just as the commentary kicks in again. Too late, again.
Other than that, I am so totally addicted to the podcasts that I keep listening – learning to brace myself when I think a commercial might be coming up. Gritting my teeth really tight seems to make it hurt less. I think the other people on the bus think I’m fighting the urge to obey voices in my head or something, though… I suddenly tense up, pupils dilate, breath stops short… What? Kill them all? No. The noise will stop. Aaaaaah. There it goes…

Josh and King are likely sick of hearing me gush about Battlestar Galactica. It’s likely the best scifi series. Evar. Deep stories, without glossing over stuff or throwing in expendable Red Shirts or resorting to transporters or holo-decks. I won’t give any spoilers – just don’t let your revulsion over the resurrection of the ’70s camp original series get in the way. At least watch the miniseries…
The first season actually had plot twists and conflicts that I didn’t see coming, and didn’t feel formulaic or rushed (unlike nearly every other show ever made). It’s way more than the hottie f*ckbots (played by a small-town Alberta girl no less). There’s riffs of spirituality, humanity, politics, ethics, honour, deception, etc… The last episode of the first season completely blew me away. I mean, I was literally stunned. That’s never happened with any other TV show before.
I don’t have access to the channel that broadcasts it in Calgary (they use a nasty bundle “buy these 10 crap channels so you get the 1 you want” plan, which I will not bend over for).
There’s something that rhymes with Schmidtorrent that will do the job.
Or, if you have access to DirecTV or pay the Cable racket their dues, there’s Battlestar Galactica in HD.
ps. as campy as the original series was, Evan still plays with the Colonial Viper toy that I had when I was a kid…
pps. And the soundtrack freaking rocks! Couldn’t find it in the iTMS, nor traditional music stores. I’ll be keeping my eyes open to find a legit copy…
