Unplugging at home

Janice just dared me to go a whole month without checking the computer while at home. Apparently I’m a little addicted to checking in (RSS feeds, email, writing blog posts, etc…).

So… I’m going to give it a shot. No non-work-related computer access from home for one month. I plan on leaving the Powerbook locked up on my desk at work.

Unplugging until Monday morning…

  1. Yeah, Paul. It was you. She was cursing your name all weekend! 🙂

Nah. It was just a throwaway comment that hit closer to home than I liked, so I took her up on it. The initial dare was only for a day. When I agreed too quickly, she upped it to a month.

  2. Good luck D’Arcy, it’ll be an interesting experiment – glad I got to you this one last time over the weekend prior to your unplugging (sure hope I wasn’t the straw!!!)

  3. Another blog widow, fighting back?

You know, that’s kind of funny; the usual thing would be that you’d be asked not to do any work-related computer stuff while at home. Perhaps you’re too into the blogging?

What’s especially funny, I think, is that now you’re going to have to do all your blogging at work. Let’s see what this does to your productivity.

  4. Good luck. I’ve had brief spans of time where I’ve sworn off technology and come out feeling better for it on the other side. Now that I’ve got a laptop it’s becoming harder and harder to detach. Is campus wireless a good or bad thing? Time will tell ;).

  5. Like most technophiles I’ve been down this path with mixed success. While away at Educause, I came to realize just how connected I can be and the associated pitfalls. So for the last couple of weeks I’ve made efforts to reduce the amount of time I spend ‘at work’ at home. That said – when you enjoy what you do, how do you really define work?

  6. Three days? ouch. Well, I’ve lasted 1 already 🙂

It’s not so much the Blog Widow that bothered me, but the Blog Orphan. I’m hoping to take the month to shake the obsessive-compulsive habit, and then rejoin in a more healthy way…

But, yeah… I’m also assuming that my blogging will slow down a bit since I’ll be doing it on the clock. Much of my blogging is work-related, so that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. It’s essentially documenting my projects, which is a Good Thingâ„¢.

  7. I don’t like spending time at the GF’s place. Her bed is hard (and small) and she doesn’t have wireless yet. Forces me to read while she does correcting. Which is good, since I started a blog series on Giller Guilt and the new award winner. I needed the time to read it.
