Canadian Music Creators Coalition

From Slashdot comes a mention of the Canadian Music Creators Coalition.

This is one of the coolest things from the world of musicians with respect to IP and copyright. Some of the biggest names in Canadian music just put their feet down to tell the Big Labels not to be evil.

They have a handy website up, with their three principles:

  1. Suing Our Fans is Destructive and Hypocritical
  2. Digital Locks are Risky and Counterproductive
  3. Cultural Policy Should Support Actual Canadian Artists

So, the artists that have the most to gain from protecting the status quo are being very vocal about not wanting to be involved with it.

The odds of me spending cash on buying Canadian music just went way up. Some Broken Social Scene tracks are in my immediate future…

  1. I believe that the important thing about these artists making this statement is that they are asking for their own rights back.

I hope that this movement spreads.

  2. Will the Canadian Music Creators be successful. Lets see how their principles would work out. They just want the fair use of their music. They want it to be purchased legally for the benefit of the Big Labels. Lets wait and watch how this copyrigt thing will turn out.

  3. d – they’re not saying to let people steal music – that’s just wrong. They’re saying that fair use should be protected, and DRM-crippled CDs should not be used because they violate fair use. It’s a completely separate issue from music downloads (legal or otherwise) – it’s about crippling legally purchased physical media to protect the interests of the Big Labels.

  4. not sure what my take is on this one. i’m not entirely sure i even agree with those principles, because punishing people who steal—(what kind of a “fan” would do that? you wouldn’t steal something you didn’t covet i suppose, so maybe all thieves are fans in a sense…)—is the right thing to do. i haven’t seen a glimmer of the correct evolution yet, and it leaves me very discouraged. most people don’t want to steal.

we’ll see if anyone notices some of the biggest names in Canadian music on this one, and perhaps the dialog can start on a new foot.

  5. look at those industry execs backpedal…

God bless Stephen Page. Well, not just Stephen. Fronted by the PR mugshot of Stephen Page, the group includes Barenaked Ladies, Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sum 41, Stars, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace), Dave Bidini (Rheostatics), B…
