ADETA Interface 2006

Dave, Patty and I spent 2 (and a bit) glorious days in beautiful downtown Lethbridge for the ADETA Interface 2006 conference. It was my first time to Lethbridge (aside from a blur seen from a speeding car that didn’t leave the highway, back when I was a kid). We wound up spending some time exploring, hiking, and wandering around town (and the U of L campus).

The Interface conference was different than any other conference I’ve been to. It was much homier, with all of the attendees appearing to know each other already. This was my first Interface, so although I knew many of the names, I didn’t recognize many faces.

I’m not going to blog much about the conference – it’s a distance ed. conference, so I’ll assume it’s all available online somewhere. I did write a page of notes during one of the keynotes – not about the keynote, but to capture some of my thoughts about didacticism and risk aversion, using my “inside voice” rather that just blogging it out loud. I’ll filter and self censor, and if any of it survives, will make a future blog post about it.

I did take a whole bunch of photos of Lethbridge and the U of L campus. It’s a very beautiful place – with a deep gorge cut through the middle of the city by the Old Man River. The world’s longest and highest train trestle bridge dominates any view of the river. I’ll post a pano taken from the U of L, overlooking the entire valley – including, of course, the train bridge.

  1. Glad you enjoyed it. We’re going to try to make some post-conference materials available online (see if we can round up some PPTs etc. from folks) and post them online at the Interface 2006 web site — http://interface2006.uleth.ca/.

First, I’m taking the weekend off!

  2. Pattie – that was really unfortunate. We just got to say Hello, when the session started. Not like I was really paying attention anyway, but it would have been rude to just keep talking 🙂

If you need to talk with a BSG fan after the finale (or before) just shout. Mind. Blowing. Can’t WAIT for October, when season 3 starts to air. Forcing myself not to look on the forums or anything, since there are occasional tipoffs from folks that see the crews shooting in Vancouver.

Any ideas where Interface 2007 is? Someplace more central might be conducive to a higher turnout, and someplace with conference sessions in the same postal code would help inter-session conversation. It was tough to meet-and-greet while hiking across the entire U of L campus, and up the hill to/from lunch etc…

  3. Hey D’Arcy — it’s too bad I didn’t get a chance to connect with you and Patty D. during the conference. Just as I was introducing myself, Tony Bates started to speak. 🙂 I really wish I could have seen your presentation on ePortfolios. Perhaps I can find another time to meet up with you and Patty.

Also, on a purely un-work-related note, I was hoping to chat with a fellow fan about BG — my pal here in ADC who watches it recently took a job at U of C, and my other pal who watches it is in Ontario. (Of course, the discussion would have had to be spoiler-free, as I still have 2 episodes to go on SPACE channel.)

As it was, I met some wonderful people at Interface — that’s my main reason for going, the great folks I get to meet and/or see again. At the banquet, the topic of discussion at our table somehow meandered from Instructional Design to the nature of good and evil. Definitely a thought-provoking experience. . .

  4. My god, it’s green! I grew up there and that was a rare site to see the coulees green like they are there.

  5. It’s back to Edmonton for 2007. Grant MacEwan College.

Sorry about the distances between rooms. Construction ended up closing a bunch of rooms we were planning to use, so we ended up just taking what we could get.
