Spore: First Impressions

I’d LOVE to have written a post on how awesome Spore is, what a great game/simulation it is, and how I’ve been playing it nonstop since it was released.

But I can’t.

I prepurchased Spore for Mac on September 5 – 2 days before the release – and have yet to receive a download link for Spore for Mac from EA. They sent me links to the PC AutoDownloader, and PC installer. But no Mac version. So far, I’ve been ripped off by EA.

To date, all I’ve received for my money is this:

As it is, I have a hard time recommending Spore to anyone, because it means dealing with EA. And all they’ve done is rip me off and not answer my repeated pleas to give me the product I paid for.

  1. I didn’t think the pre download or soft download was available for Mac at all…I ended up buying the creature creator at EB Games for $10 a while back … I imagine they have the full version, too.

(And yes, the Mac needs to have compatible buy and download software services. I love and have written about Valve’s Steam system on my blog)

  2. Yeah. I followed the “Spore – for Mac” (or however it was worded) link on the EA website, hit the Preorder button and gave them money. At no point did it say “PC-only” – I assumed (incorrectly) that it was either for both, or that it would provide an option to download my selected platform when it was available. The “Spore for Mac” link to the store was misleading.

Since I wrote the post, they’ve emailed me to offer a refund, after I sent a pretty clear, terse, but still polite (well, not rude, anyway) email outlining what the problem is.
