2 photographs printed in Alberta Views magazine

one way in printbeyond landfillI love Creative Commons. Because I tagged my photos with a CC license, a small and local magazine found some of my photographs, and was able to use them in a recent issue. I didn’t make a penny, and it didn’t cost them a penny. But they were able to find good images for what they needed, and I get to say my photos are in a magazine. Win/win.

  1. Hello! I’m writing an article about San Francisco. I’m wondering if I could use your picture were you can see san francisco downtown, Union Squre and so on? Please email be back to answer.

    1. certainly, emmi. All of my photos on Flickr are released under a simple Creative Commons license, and are available free of charge for any use – as long as proper attribution is given with the image.

  2. Had they asked for leave to use them first? I realize that it’s not necessary, and just a courtesy, but it’s nice to be asked.

    1. Yup. The art director tracked down my phone number and called me. We talked briefly, and he was surprised I wasn’t asking for money. No, I said, as long as you abide by CC:by, you can use them for free. That’s the whole point. If you can’t put attribution, then we can negotiate a price. He said of COURSE he’d put attribution – they do that with all photos. Done and dunner. He sent me a copy of the magazine to see what kinds of stuff they publish, and also sent me a copy of the one with my photos in it.

  3. Yeah D’Arcy! Yeah CC! I love stories like this. And as my old hitchiking buddy used to say to me when the road took care of us “Well, what else did you expect?”

    1. I don’t think I know any. Well, maybe, but all of them are posting their stuff on Flickr as well – the most successful one posts everything he shoots on Flickr under a CC license (including shots that clients allow him to post)
