Go Oilers!

Wow. Calgary didn’t even show up to game 7. No energy. No chemistry. They couldn’t keep the puck on a stick no matter what they did. What a shame, because they had played so well all season, only to crumble in the playoffs.

Here’s hoping the Oilers can keep the Stanley Cup in Alberta…

Will blog for Flames tickets

The playoffs start on Friday, with Calgary in first place in the North West division.

If you’ve got a spare ticket or two (or have some extra room in your Superbox) and want to support your friendly neighborhood edublogger, give me a shout. I’m willing to trade for some space on this award winning edublog 🙂

Yeah, baby!

Best. Game. EVAR!

The Calgary-Vancouver game just ended. Holy. Crap. What a great game. I kept thinking “Man, this is the best game I’ve seen so far this year!” It was fast, back-and-forth all over the ice. Few stupid penalties. Fights, and fast, physical play. Awesome saves on both ends. Kipper was on freaking fire – whatever he’s getting paid, he deserves more.

Chris Simon’s goal was absolutely beautiful. He made an impossible interception of a pass, then kicked the puck forward from his trailing skate, giving him a clean path to the net. First goal in something like 16 games, IIRC, and was he stoked about it.

Oh, yeah. And the Flames won the game 6-5 in a shootout. The entire game was neck-and-neck, with goals being answered sometimes within seconds. And it ended up in a shootout. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

I’m soooo jealous of Brian, who was able to sell a kidney or two to get tickets to the game. It must have been amazing to be in the arena for this one – the fans were on their feet for most of the third period (judging from the CBC camera coverage, anyway).

Iggy vs. Brodeur

I actually got to watch the game last night. Calgary vs. New Jersey. Hell of a game, and it helped that the Flames kicked some royal ass, too.

In the first period, I had a sinking feeling that Calgary wasn’t quite there. And then it happened. Iggy got pissed off. And almost dropped the gloves. Flashback to the last Stanley Cup run, where the Flames were often dormant until Iginla got pissed off and beat the crap out of someone, then went on to score a bunch of goals. He was |<-- this close -->| to scoring a hat trick last night, after being held goalless for the previous 9 games.

It helped that New Jersey basically shut down after Iggy got in their faces. Their defense just stopped trying. They did outshoot the Flames by over 2:1, but Sauve was rocking our net. Great to see we have two solid goalies this year – Kipper can relax a bit.

Now, if only the TSN announcers would just shut the hell up during the game. Leave the commentary to the time between plays and periods, and let us watch the game without your inane banter…

Flames are Back!

There’s still a few minutes left in the Calgary-Vancouver game, but man it feels like the Flames are starting to hit their stride from the 2003 Stanley Cup run. Very physical game. Fast. Kobasew just hauled ass over half the length of the rink to prevent an icing call – a great race for the puck. They also killed a 5-on-3 powerplay! That was incredible.

And Kipper? Dayum! He’s on FIRE! Can’t believe some of his saves so far!

Vancouver’s holding their own, too. Auld is rocking in their net, and they’ve had lots of great chances that were stopped only because Kipper is working his magic.

Update: Yeah! They took it! First time they’ve won 3 in a row since 2003 🙂

Flames Home Opener banished to SportsNet???

The first home game since the Flames made their dash for the Stanley Cup – the entire city has been waiting for this for a year. And the game is banished to CTV SportsNet? Why the hell isn’t the game on every single channel? Hockey Night in Canada should be doing a special event. Heck, even TSN could cover it – it’s part of the basic cable package, so would reach the whole city. CBC has decided it’s better to run Coronation Street and Canadian Antiques Road Show (from Montreal). Coronation Street? Really?

But SportsNet means you have to subscribe to the correct “tier” of channels, getting a whole bunch of low-quality crap to get the one you want. So, I don’t have access to SportsNet, since we only subscribe to basic cable at home.

I guess I’ll be keeping the stats window open during the game – and tuning in to the NHL Radio stream, since I don’t have a radio in my house (we hates it…).

I was really looking forward to watching this game tonight, assuming they’d at least try to make sure it got out to a wide audience. It’s not like the game won’t sell out or anything…

Update: Just had a thought… What if the iTunes video section carried streaming live events? Sure, you couldn’t chuck them onto your iPod, but they’d play nicely via Front Row. I’d pay some cash to watch the game tonight. I’d bet people would also pay to watch the Stevenotes and One More Things… There must be an audience for streaming, and if the infrastructure is mostly in place, it just might work. Of course, paying customers would be less tolerant of stream droppage…

Update 2: Holy. Crap. Is the quality of the Windows Media stream suck-tacular! 20Kb/sec stream, and it sounds like a weak AM radio signal while driving through a tunnel or parkade. And it keeps dropping out for no apparent reason. Jebus. Why do people settle for Windows Media???

OK, So the first game sucked…

Big old Flaming CIt wasn’t anywhere near the level they were playing at the end of the last season (over a year ago). The Flames didn’t even show up for the first period, and gave up some silly opportunities in the second and third. They did have one hell of a rally, to come within one point in the third, but because of earlier screwups it was just too much to come back from.

Still, it was only the first game of the season. It was great to see them on the ice again. Give them a couple of games to gel and they’ll rock again.

If anyone wants to swap some seats in the Saddledome for advertising space on my blog, I’m open to offers 🙂
