Graduate Student Teaching Development: Facilitating Active Learning

Instructors who implement active learning in their classrooms use student-centered, participatory, experiential strategies to engage learners.  Research evidence shows that active learning makes course content more meaningful for learners, and leads to a statistically significant benefit with respect to the achievement of learning outcomes.  The scope of active learning activities that are applicable in higher education is wide, and there are many opportunities to incorporate active learning into even the most content-heavy courses.  In this workshop, participants will experience several active learning strategies, and will have an opportunity to discuss ideas and design options for incorporating active learning in their classes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Characterize active learning;
  • Describe how active learning strategies can be incorporated into classroom instruction; and
  • Design at least one active learning strategy to use in a classroom, lab, or seminar.

This workshop can be used toward the 2016-2017 Graduate Student Teaching Development Program.
