The Photo and Video Essay

This workshop is designed to introduce instructors to the photo (or video) essay as an instructional tool. Participants in the workshop will create both the assignment and the product during the workshop, defining their goals for student engagement and synthesis of course content. Photo and video essays increase student engagement, play to student strengths surrounding digital expression, and teach them how to integrate multifaceted ideas into a cohesive narrative.

Learning outcomes: Develop goals for learners surrounding course content and create an assignment using the photo essay framework. Apply concepts of the assignment in the photo essay, in order to understand the challenge and value surrounding the assignment.

Darren Sjogren, Aaron Williams, Andrea Freeman, and Dianne Draper teach a variety of travel-related and classroom courses in Geography, Earth Science, and Archaeology. Their active engagement in pedagogical research has led to new ways to integrate experiential and traditional classroom content.  In addition to designing techniques that integrate multi-disciplinary humanistic and scientific perspectives, they endeavor to provide students deep connection with the subject material and engage students in new communication strategies.
