Plagiarism: Moving From Punitive to Progressive Approaches

In this interactive workshop we’ll tackle some of the tough and taboo questions around plagiarism. We’ll discover what the research says about how often and why it happens. The focus of this workshop will be on moving away from outdated punitive practices (“Gotcha!) to more productive modern approaches around prevention, including a discussion of the role that formative assessment plays. Join us for a frank and practical approach to one of academia’s hot topics.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand progressive approaches to plagiarism.
  • Understand the role formative feedback plays in helping to prevent plagiarism.
  • Learn key research findings about plagiarism

Sarah Elaine Eaton is an Assistant Professor in the Werklund School of Education. In 2016 she received a WSE Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant to study plagiarism and academic integrity.
